DEBATE Class - Progress period 1

1 semester class syllabus  – ½ COMM /Art credit

WEEK 1 – WELCOME

       1.)    Go over Blog / Get to know you games / learn names / Line games (“Liar Liar”, “Yes and”…)
       2.)    Several Split Class Debates (simple topics from list) – (no Lab prep) – just use phones

Introduce:
VOCAB of Debate:  Resolution
                                  AFF/NEG
                                  Claim
                                  Expert
                                  Reasoning back to the claim
                                  EVIDENCE TESTING and FACT finding
                                  TYPES of REASONING
                                  
                                  ETHOS – PATHOS -  LOGOS

WEEK 2 – DEBATE #1 - LD Style (pick a topic from the list on the blog)

VALUE DEBATING – history and purpose of LD, sample video of the style, coin toss for sides

Computer Lab Work
Build Case #1 – 1 min per argument/ cross examination (AFF speaks final word)

HOLD DEBATES in class (1.5 days) - audience keeps a flow of the debates and submits for pts
Students MUST submit a typed debate case to receive pts in any debate
(Debates can not be improvised!!!)

WEEK 3 – DEBATE #2 – PUF Style (Pick a topic form the list on the blog)

PUBLIC FORUM DEBATING – history and purpose of PUF, sample video of the style, coin toss for sides

Computer lab Work
Build Case #2 – 1 min per argument, with crossfire (AFF speaks final word)

HOLD DEBATES in class (1.5 days) - audience keeps a flow of the debates and submits for pts
Students MUST submit a typed debate case to receive pts in any debate
(Debates can not be improvised!!!)

WEEK 4 – PSA –  solo work (script and powerpoint performed live)
Review blog page on "topic selection"
Look at several PSA examples on line
Students work on selecting a topic after brainstorming exercises.

Computer lab work
Build a 1.5 minute PSA for a live presentation.

Objective: to develop a PSA that persuades the audience to take action on an important issue in the school or to join an organization that supports the efforts to end this particular issue.

#1.) Write a script and build a powerpoint (or Google Slide) presentation simultaneously. 
#2.) Include title screens, imagery, video clips and voice over seamlessly.

IF YOU WANT TO MAKE IT ON VIDEO (MP4 only)- GO FOR IT!!!
It must play on your Google Drive to get pts
Record all audio on your phone and edit using any application of your choosing.

WEEK 5 

PRESENTATIONS OF solo PSAs - the whole class presents (1 Day only!!!)

(once all presentations are complete)

GROUP PSA 
Letter to the 1st grader" - whole class video PSA

Activity: Introduction to the topic and free write the advice we want to give 
Class discussion / moderated by teacher / recording notes 

By the end of the hour we have each written down a valuable piece of advice that they will not only understand but that they will also benefit from receiving.

Objective: To video record all students delivering their message, compile them and title it as a short video and to share it to the first grade teachers to show to the students.
EACH student presents on video twice!!!

While recording the group PSA – the class picks topics, picks partners, and begins researching the last debate for the progress period!!!


Computer Lab work
Build Case #3 – (LD Format - "value debate")
1.5 min max per argument, with cross examinations - AFF speaks final word

HOLD DEBATES in class (1.5 days) - audience keeps a flow of the debates and submits for pts
Students MUST submit a typed debate case to receive pts in any debate


(Debates can not be improvised!!!)

WEEK 6 – DEBATE #4 
Split Class Debates - Town Hall
Pick topics from blog page / Teams are selected by Mr. Schaefer

Computer Lab work  - Internet and Library are used to develop cases
Must have one source from each of the library categories in your case
(internet, newspaper, book, magazine, reference)

Each team of four turns in 4 separate debate cases stapled - NO TEAM BUILT CASES!!!

EACH DEBATER – 1 CASE = (3 typed 45 second arguments), (6 experts cited), (3 Quotes), (a minimum of 2 analogies used), and (1 piece of physical evidence to show)  

Teams are responsible for ordering their case on their own time  - use Google docs to talk and share ideas, but not your individual case files!!!

HOLD DEBATES - in class (2 days total) – audience keeps a flow of the debates and submits for pts
ALL Students MUST submit a typed debate case to receive pts in any debate
(Debates can not be improvised!!!)


***Reflection paper (1 page typed) of your experience in the 1st 6 week Progress period is to be turned on the last day of the progress period to receive pts.***
