DEBATE Class - Progress period 1

WEEK 1 – WELCOME

       1.)    Go over Blog / Get to know you games / learn names / Line games (“Liar Liar”, “Yes and”…)
       2.)    Circle games - Single word - to claims - to simple reasoning (no research)

Introduce:
VOCAB of Debate:  Resolution
                                  AFF/NEG
                                  Claim (a statement of truth)
                                  Reasoning (logically pulling us back to the claim) - "therefore..."

WEEK 2 and 3  - DEBATE - LD Style (up to 3 people per side
25 pts total - script
25 pts total - presentation

RESOLUTION: picked by members

CLAIMS: three claims written for the AFF and NEG (BEFORE COIN TOSS!!!)

VALUE DEBATING – Must be a Value debate topic (something that asks "if this were true?...then should we or shouldn't we be doing it?" 

Computer Lab Work (with worksheet)
Build Case #1 – 45 sec per argument / no cross examination (AFF speaks final word)

HOLD DEBATES in class (3.5 days) - audience keeps a flow of the debates and submits for pts
Students MUST submit a typed debate case to receive pts in any debate
(Debates can not be improvised!!!)

Short discussion after debates with the class.

WEEK 4 Public Service Announcements 
2 minutes maximum - including a minimum of 5 pic slides and 5 text slides
50 pts - script
50 pts - presentation

We will Look at several PSA examples 
Objectiveto develop a PSA that persuades the audience to take action on an important issue in the school or to join an organization that supports the efforts to end this particular issue.

#1.) Mindmap possible problems that need to be addressed on campus or in your neighborhood.
#2.) Write 5 questions you have about the problem.
#3.) Computer lab work - research to find the answers to your questions
#4.) Gather information and build a 1.5 minute PSA script and Google SLIDE presentation for a LIVE delivery of the PSA.
#5.) Include title screens, imagery, video clips and voice over. - TIME IT!!!
#6.) Rehearse the presentation to make sure it is fluid and seamless.
#7.) Submit your script ONLY for pts.

ALL PRESENTATIONS WILL BE DONE LIVE - NO MOVIES!!!

WEEK 5 DEBATE – PUBLIC FORUM (PUF) 
25 pts total - script
25 pts total - presentation

RESOLUTION: picked by members

CLAIMS: three claims written for the AFF and NEG (BEFORE COIN TOSS!!!)

SIMPLE "PUBLIC POLICY" DEBATING – Must be a policy debate topic (something that asks "if this were true?...then HOW do we solve it and what are strategies to solve it?"

Computer Lab Work (with PUF worksheet)
Build Case #1 – 1 minute per argument
                           1 minute cross examination
                          (AFF speaks final word)

HOLD DEBATES in class (4.5 days) - audience keeps a flow of the debates and submits for pts
Students MUST submit a typed debate case to receive pts in any debate
(Debates can not be improvised!!!)

Short discussion after all debates with the class.

WEEK 6 -  “Letter to the 1st grader"  - Confession Booth Video Assignment
25 pts - script
25 pts - video presentation

OBJECTIVE: to offer advice to the next generation based on personal experience and hindsight.

Activity:
#1.) mindmap the various types of advice you think are valuable
#2.) Outline a short script / write the advice we want to give 
#3.) Listening pairs / share with a partner
#4.) Draft a script

By the end of the hour we have each written down a valuable piece of advice that they will not only understand but that they will also benefit from receiving.

Objective: To video record all students delivering their message, compile them and title it as a short video and to share it to the first grade teachers to show to the students.
EACH student presents on video twice!!!

While recording the group PSA – the class picks topics, picks partners, and begins researching the last debate for the progress period!!!

1.5 min max per argument, with cross examinations - AFF speaks final word
