DEBATE Class - Progress 2  

WEEK 7 – Original Oratory
Introduction:  Go over our Blog page resources / structure of the outline
Watch an example on youtube:
(12 minutes) - 2016 Champion – “on balance/purpose”

Activity for the rest of the week:
Draw from a hat - simple one word topics – speak with little to no prep (1min) – make a point - conclude

WEEK 8 – Original Oratory
Pyramid outline structure (on blog page) – go over the terminology and structure
Watch an example on youtube: (follow along with the outline and try to match it up to the speech)
(11 minutes) – 2013 3rd place – “for Crying out loud”
Discussion of how she used the format – identify the parts of the speech and the transitions

You tube video – (4 minutes) - NFL – “How to judge Original Oratory”
Look at judging sheets (rubrics for the event)

Return to the pyramid outline and watch another example
Watch an example on youtube: (follow along with the outline and try to match it up to the speech)
(13.5 minutes) – 2014 1st place – “America without the dream”
Discussion of how she used the format – identify the parts of the speech and the transitions

Watch youtube video (7.5 minutes)- "TED's Secret to Great Public Speaking"  

Computer Lab time
Topic choices brainstormed
Begin working on the speech  - find the importance of the topic / find the people who agree
Develop the structure of the piece based on the “pyramid” format/outline
Rough drafts due at the beginning of the next week for a (4 min) script – Mr. Schaefer’s standard tempo – ***MUST READ AT 4 minutes or more to receive pts for the rough draft!!!***

WEEK 9 – Original Oratory - Perform them from the page to partners / judge the round
Speaking Power: Watch You tube video 
"The 7 secrets to the greatest public speakers in history" -  Richard Greene

Computer Lab work   
#1.) Redraft / rewrites (cut down to a 3.5 minute speech)  
#2.) Memorization techniques explored (video, demostrations, and handout)
#3.) Homework (over 2 days) – MEMORIZE the 3.5 minute speech
DUE - Deliver the speech on Friday!!! 


WEEK 10 –SPEAKING POWER
RADIO  Talk shows  - 4 person barbershop format
TOPICS – (3) current events from TIME Magazines/New York Times/The Wash Post/BBC America/CNN/MSNBC or newspapers
Discussion / Analysis / OpEd

Computer Lab/Library work

Activity - Pick 2 articles on current events
      1.)    read each article entirely
      2.)    outline each article using a graphic organizer 
      3.)  Analyze the view points in each article  
      4.)    Write your own counter arguments

Research opposing viewpoints and evidence to support the opposition
Create a script for the favorite of the 2 topics 

 1.)   Write a (1 min) oratory inspired by the article 
       2.)    Then write 3 questions to open discussion for each article
       3.)  Print out 3 more copies and staple them for your group to prepare
       4.)  GROUP WORK - everyone reads everyone's article to be discussed and the write an answer to                                           the question being asked by the speaker.

 5.) Presentation of the barbershop shows (2 days) – Each person does one of their articles on the air  
     with conversation after each oratory. (must share all citations on the air)

Students must turn in all brainstorming, articles used, research, dissention writings, and questions to receive pts for this assignment!!!
